Israeli authorities prevented the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and the Custos of the Holy Land from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate Palm Sunday mass, in what was described as an unprecedented move.

A church statement indicated that the ban constitutes a violation of freedom of worship and disregards the feelings of Christians worldwide.

The incident comes ahead of Easter, amid calls to reopen the church and allow worshippers access.
