Israeli Knesset Passes Law Imposing Death Penalty on Palestinian Prisoners

The Israeli Knesset approved on Monday, March 30, 2026, a law imposing the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, passing with 62 votes in favor, 48 against, and one abstention.

The bill was adopted in its second and third readings, making it effective, amid widespread local and international criticism.

The legislation was introduced by the far-right Jewish Power party, led by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, along with Likud lawmaker Nissim Vaturi.

Key provisions of the law include:

  • Scope: Applies to Palestinians living in areas under Israeli control.

  • Penalty: Mandates the death penalty for non-Israeli residents of the West Bank convicted of intentional killing in what Israel defines as “terrorist acts.”

  • Exception: Allows life imprisonment only in very limited circumstances.

Human rights organizations have criticized the law, arguing that it promotes discrimination and violates international legal standards.
