Japan and South Korea have both registered their hottest summers on record since data collection began, in a new indicator of accelerating climate change.

In Japan, the average temperature exceeded the normal by 2.36°C, with record highs set at 123 weather monitoring stations.

Authorities have warned of continued extreme heat and urged citizens to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
