In a pivotal move for the future of Lebanese stability, the government has announced its welcome of a “secret” plan presented by the army to enforce state sovereignty by confining weapons to its hands, based on the Taif Agreement and international resolution 1701.
Information Minister Paul Marqos affirmed that the plan would remain confidential to ensure its success, noting that the army commander would submit monthly reports to monitor its implementation.
However, this step immediately created a rift within the Council of Ministers, as ministers from the “Shiite Duo” (Amal Movement and Hezbollah) withdrew from the session, considering that the discussion exceeded the national consensus required to address such a sensitive issue, and asserting that any decision issued in their absence would be “unconstitutional.”
