French President Emmanuel Macron will appoint a new prime minister within 48 hours, the Élysée Palace announced on Wednesday evening, following consultations conducted by outgoing Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu.

In a statement, the presidency said Macron thanked Lecornu for his efforts over the past two days and acknowledged his conclusions that a majority of lawmakers oppose dissolving parliament, that political stability is achievable, and that the 2026 budget could be passed by the end of December.

Earlier on Wednesday, Lecornu said he saw a “path forward” to forming a new government, although he described the “final stage” as challenging, adding that France could have a new prime minister within the next 48 hours.
