Madagascar Military Takes Control Following Presidential Ouster

Madagascar’s military announced on Tuesday that it has assumed control of the country following the parliament’s vote to remove President Andry Rajoelina, amid weeks of widespread public protests.

Elite unit commander Colonel Michael Randrianirina stated that the military has suspended the constitution and temporarily halted the functions of the government and some state institutions, describing the move as temporary to ensure stability.

The takeover came after President Rajoelina had announced the dissolution of parliament earlier Tuesday, a move that parliament countered with his removal. French broadcaster RFI reported that Rajoelina secretly left the country on a French military plane, though no official statement has confirmed his whereabouts.

The Supreme Constitutional Court has officially invited Colonel Randrianirina to assume the position of interim president.
