Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Strikes Los Ríos Region in Southern Chile

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Chile’s Los Ríos region on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

According to the agency, the quake’s epicenter was located about 134 kilometers from the coastal town of Corral at a depth of 9.7 kilometers.

Chile sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a seismic hotspot prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. In 2010, the country was hit by a massive 8.8-magnitude quake followed by a tsunami that killed around 500 people.
