Residents and local leaders said more than 5,000 people fled the border town of Kirawa in northeast Nigeria into Cameroon after Boko Haram fighters seized control.
Borno state has endured a 16-year insurgency led by the group and by ISIS–West Africa Province.
This year, rebels have stepped up attacks on civilians and military bases, though the Nigerian army managed to repel some after receiving reinforcements.
