Around 200,000 members of the ultra-Orthodox Haredi community rallied in West Jerusalem, paralyzing the city, to protest plans by the Israeli occupation government to draft them into the army.

The demonstration followed a court ruling last year that annulled exemptions previously granted to seminary students from mandatory military service.

Protesters said forced conscription “contradicts their religious beliefs,” while the government insists on “equal burden-sharing.”
