Mauritanian President Fires 12 Officials over $1 Billion Corruption Scandal

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani on Tuesday dismissed 12 senior officials following allegations of large-scale corruption revealed in a recent Court of Accounts report that uncovered the disappearance of more than $1 billion from public funds between 2021 and 2023.

The report, published two weeks ago and handed to the president, triggered widespread public outrage and calls for accountability. It detailed serious financial irregularities across several state institutions, ranging from poor management to embezzlement of public money.

Speaking on Monday at the National School of Administration, President Ghazouani vowed that anyone implicated in corruption would face justice, stressing that “no one will be above the law.”

The Court of Accounts has also submitted an additional list of 30 other officials suspected of misconduct, prompting the government to approve their immediate dismissal during Tuesday’s cabinet meeting.
