Mexico Plans to Raise Tariffs on Chinese Cars to 50% Under U.S. Pressure

Mexico’s government has introduced a draft bill to increase tariffs on Chinese-made cars to 50%, up from the current 15–20%, amid mounting pressure from the United States, officials revealed Wednesday.

In March, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her administration would review tariffs on Chinese products after Washington pushed Mexico to prevent becoming a gateway for Chinese goods entering the U.S. market.

The proposed tariff hike, now before parliament, is expected to have a significant impact on the automotive sector and Mexico’s trade ties with Beijing.
