Netanyahu Backs Pause in Iran Strikes, Says Ceasefire Does Not Include Lebanon

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed support on Wednesday for U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend attacks on Iran for two weeks, while emphasizing that the ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon.

In a statement issued by his office in English, Netanyahu said: “Israel supports President Trump’s decision to suspend attacks for two weeks, provided that Iran opens the Strait of Hormuz and agrees to a ceasefire.”

He added that Israel supports U.S. efforts to ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons and does not pose a threat—through missiles or what he described as terrorism—to the United States, Israel, Gulf countries, or the wider world.

However, Netanyahu stressed that the temporary ceasefire does not apply to Lebanon, while Iran insists that any agreement to end the war should include the Lebanese front.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump announced his approval to halt strikes against Iran for two weeks, conditioned on the full and immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a mutual ceasefire.

The announcement came less than two hours before the expiration of a deadline set by Trump for Iran, warning of severe consequences if no agreement was reached.
