South Korea announced that its northern neighbor conducted its first missile test of the year by launching several ballistic missiles that traveled between 900 and 950 kilometers toward the East Sea.

Seoul stated that it is closely monitoring the characteristics of the missiles in coordination with the United States and has increased its military readiness levels.

The test came ahead of a planned visit by the South Korean president to Beijing, amid escalating regional tensions over nuclear and security issues on the Korean Peninsula.
