German police announced that the site of the “Oktoberfest” festival in Munich will remain closed throughout Wednesday, following hours after a fire broke out and explosions were heard in a residential building in the north of the city, along with a bomb threat.
Organizers of the famous beer festival confirmed in a statement on their official website: “Due to a bomb threat linked to the explosion in northern Munich, the festival will remain closed until 5:00 p.m. for the time being.”
Police explained that they had found explosive devices inside the residential building where the fire and explosions occurred, and that they are investigating any possible link between the incident and the Oktoberfest festival, which is held annually in the Theresienwiese area.
Authorities announced on Wednesday morning that there is no direct danger threatening the public in Munich, following a heavy security deployment on one of the city’s main streets after sounds of explosions and gunfire were reported.
A spokesperson for the local police told the media that “security and firefighting operations are still ongoing,” confirming that the road remains widely closed, without providing further details about the nature of the incident.
