Ons Jabeur Announces Open-Ended Break from Tennis

Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur announced Thursday that she is stepping away from the sport indefinitely, without specifying whether the move marks a temporary pause or permanent retirement.

In a message posted on her official account on X (formerly Twitter), the 30-year-old athlete wrote:
“Over the past two years, I’ve pushed myself through injuries and numerous challenges, but deep down, I haven’t truly felt happy on the court for some time.”

Jabeur did not disclose how long she intends to stay away from competition or what her next steps will be, stating only that she needs time to “regain balance and rediscover the joy” in playing.

The decision follows a difficult period for the three-time Grand Slam finalist, who has faced mounting struggles in recent months.

Jabeur made history in recent years as the first Arab and African woman to reach a Grand Slam final and to be ranked as high as world No. 2 in singles by the WTA.
