The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned Israeli threats against senior Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, imprisoned since 2002, describing them as “an unprecedented provocation.”
The statement followed the circulation of footage showing far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir raiding Barghouti’s solitary confinement cell in Ramon Prison and directly threatening him: “You will not win. Anyone who targets the people of Israel or kills our sons and daughters will be erased.”
The threats came a day after hardline Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich vowed to “bury” the idea of a Palestinian state.
The ministry held the Israeli government fully responsible for Barghouti’s life and that of all prisoners.
Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh said Ben Gvir’s threats amount to the peak of psychological, moral, and physical terrorism against prisoners, violating international and humanitarian conventions.
