Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya, the world’s longest-serving current head of state, has been re-elected for an eighth term, winning 53.66% of the vote.
His main challenger, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, rejected the outcome, claiming victory and denouncing the election as a “farce.”
The country’s electoral commission had announced Biya’s victory last week, and the Constitutional Council confirmed the results on Monday, making them final and legally binding. The announcement comes amid widespread protests and sporadic violence triggered by the opposition’s rejection of the vote.
