Two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday that the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) is expected to deploy thousands of troops from the elite 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East.

The potential deployment comes as President Donald Trump’s administration seeks to hold talks with Iran, even as military reinforcements in the region continue to grow.

Reuters had previously reported on March 18 that the administration is considering sending additional US forces, a move that could expand options to include deploying troops inside Iran.

Such a step could significantly escalate the conflict, now in its fourth week, which has already disrupted global markets.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, did not specify the destination or timing of the deployment. The troops are currently stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The US military referred questions to the White House, which said any official announcements regarding troop deployments would come from the Pentagon.
