At least one person was killed and more than a hundred others injured overnight in Lima, the capital of Peru, following violent clashes between protesters and security forces during demonstrations against the newly formed government.
Acting President José Gheri confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that Eduardo Ruiz Sanz, 32, was killed during the unrest, as thousands took to the streets across the country to express their frustration and anger over the government’s failure to tackle a new wave of extortion and killings carried out by organized crime groups.
According to local reports, police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators, while fireworks and projectiles were fired at officers in some parts of the capital.
The protests mark a new phase of political tension and public discontent in Peru, as calls grow for urgent security reforms and stronger measures to restore stability in the country.
