Peru’s government announced on Friday its intention to declare a state of emergency in the capital, Lima, within hours following large-scale protests against newly appointed President José Jeri, who took office only days ago.
The Ombudsman’s Office reported that at least one person was killed and dozens of police officers were injured during violent overnight clashes across the country.
The protests, which began Wednesday evening, were called by members of “Generation Z,” along with transport workers and civic groups, marking the latest wave of demonstrations against corruption and rising crime that led to the ousting of former President Dina Boluarte just a week earlier.
