Peru’s Interim President Declares State of Emergency in Lima and Callao Amid Rising Violence

Peru’s interim president, José Jeri, announced on Tuesday a one-month state of emergency in the capital Lima and the neighboring city of Callao, in an exceptional measure aimed at curbing a surge in organized crime-related violence.

In a televised address carried by state media, Jeri said, “The state of emergency approved by the Council of Ministers will take effect at midnight on Wednesday and will remain in force for 30 days in Greater Lima and Callao,” according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The decree grants security forces expanded powers to conduct operations, restrict movement, and limit public gatherings as part of efforts to restore order and ensure public safety.

The announcement follows mass protests that erupted across the country on October 16, when thousands took to the streets to denounce Jeri’s new administration. He assumed office on October 10 after lawmakers unanimously voted to remove former President Dina Boluarte on grounds of “moral incapacity,” according to Bloomberg.
