A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Saturday, prompting warnings of possible tsunami waves, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake’s epicenter was located about 111 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 39.5 kilometers.

Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov said on Telegram that emergency teams had begun inspecting residential buildings and infrastructure, adding that all services were placed on high alert following the tremor.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage as assessments continued.
