Powerful 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Russia’s Far East, Tsunami Warnings Issued

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula in the Far East on Sunday, prompting authorities to issue tsunami warnings for the surrounding coastal areas.

According to a statement from the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the quake’s epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 115 kilometers southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative center of the peninsula.

Several aftershocks were recorded in the aftermath, increasing concerns of potential seismic activity in the region, which lies within the geologically volatile “Ring of Fire.”

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed the tsunami risk and urged residents to evacuate low-lying coastal areas immediately and move to higher ground.

As of now, there have been no official reports of casualties or major structural damage. Emergency teams are closely monitoring the situation and assessing the impact of both the main quake and the aftershocks.
