A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake hit about 128 kilometers east of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert, warning of potentially dangerous waves along nearby coastlines.

The tremor comes just days after another strong quake rattled the same region, raising concerns over recurring seismic activity in one of the world’s most earthquake-prone zones.
