Powerful 8.7-Magnitude Quake Triggers Tsunami in Russia’s Far East, No Casualties Reported

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, triggering tsunami waves that flooded parts of the coastal city of Severo-Kurilsk, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed.

Authorities reported no casualties or injuries resulting from the quake or the subsequent tsunami.

In a statement, the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences described the quake as the strongest recorded in the region since 1952. Scientists at the institute warned of ongoing aftershocks, some of which may reach magnitudes as high as 7.5 over the next month.

Local residents were urged to remain vigilant, especially in low-lying coastal areas, as emergency teams continued monitoring the situation.

The earthquake and its aftermath have raised renewed concerns over seismic activity in Russia’s Far East, a region known for its tectonic volatility.
