Protests in Madagascar Escalate as Soldiers Join Anti-Government Demonstrators

Antananarivo witnessed one of the largest demonstrations against President Andry Rajoelina’s rule on Saturday, as soldiers joined thousands of protesters gathered in the capital’s May 13 Square.

The rally is part of a growing youth-led protest movement that began in late September, inspired by “Gen Z protests” in Kenya and Nepal.

Demonstrators are demanding political reforms and early elections, while the government has urged “a sense of responsibility,” accusing foreign actors of stoking unrest.
