Quakes of Magnitude 5.7 and 5.6 Strike Indonesia and Taiwan, No Immediate Damage Reported

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Indonesia’s West Papua on Tuesday at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said.

In Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration said a magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit off the island’s northeastern coast later in the day.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from either quake.

Taiwan’s weather agency said the strongest intensity was recorded in Yilan county, where it reached level 4 on the island’s seven-tier seismic intensity scale.
