Portugal recorded 1,331 excess deaths between July 27 and August 15—25% above the expected rate—most of them among those over 75.
The General Directorate of Health attributed the spike to an extended heatwave and accompanying drought, which exacerbated cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses, particularly in the north, center, and Alentejo regions.
Experts warn that climate change is increasingly endangering public health.
