Rwandan Parliament Unanimously Approves U.S.-Brokered Peace Agreement with DRC

The Rwandan Parliament unanimously ratified a peace agreement with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Wednesday, marking a significant step toward easing tensions between the two neighboring countries.

The deal, signed on June 27 in Washington, D.C., under the mediation of the United States, aims to foster regional stability and address long-standing security concerns.

During the parliamentary session in Kigali, Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe emphasized that Rwanda’s defensive measures would remain in place until the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), an armed group operating in eastern Congo, is dismantled.

He outlined the conditions required for implementing the agreement, stating that concrete action from the Congolese side—particularly in disarming and dismantling the FDLR—was essential to ensuring long-term peace and security in the Great Lakes region.
