Sanai Takayashi, leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, won the lower house vote on Tuesday to become the nation’s next prime minister, marking a historic milestone as the first woman to hold the position.
According to Reuters, Takayashi secured 237 votes, surpassing the majority in the 465-seat lower house. She succeeds former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, ending a three-month political vacuum following the Liberal Democratic Party’s decisive defeat in the July elections.
