Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to begin a five-year prison sentence at Paris’s Santé Prison on October 21, becoming the first head of state in the Fifth Republic to serve time in jail.

A Paris court convicted Sarkozy on September 25 of criminal conspiracy, ruling that he allowed associates to seek illicit campaign funding from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for his 2007 presidential bid.
