Sixteen people were killed, and three others were reported missing after severe floods struck Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province, authorities announced on Tuesday.
Heavy monsoon rains swept away homes and destroyed infrastructure, forcing more than 680 people to flee temporarily.
A 14-day “emergency response period” was declared to accelerate relief and evacuation efforts.
The disaster is the latest in a series of recurring floods hitting the country as a result of climate change.
