South African police said on Sunday that nine people were killed and 10 others injured in an armed attack on a nightclub in the informal settlement of Bekersdal, in Gauteng province south of Johannesburg.

A police statement said 10 unidentified gunmen stormed the venue and opened fire on the crowd, then chased people who tried to flee and shot at them from behind.

The attackers also targeted a passing motorist during the incident, the statement added.
