Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said early Friday that Spain will not join the “Peace Council” recently launched by U.S. President Donald Trump, an initiative critics say undermines the United Nations.
Speaking to reporters after a European Union summit in Brussels, Sánchez said, “We appreciate the invitation, but we are rejecting it,” according to the German News Agency (DPA).
He explained that the decision was taken “primarily and fundamentally for the sake of consistency,” stressing that it aligns with “the multilateral system, the United Nations framework, and international law.”
Sánchez also noted that the council does not include the Palestinian Authority, citing this as another reason behind Spain’s refusal to participate.
