A study published on Tuesday by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies said President Xi Jinping’s campaign to restructure China’s military had stripped it of some of its most experienced commanders and raised doubts about its readiness for war, including a potential conflict over Taiwan.
The report said the campaign had affected dozens of officers who were arrested, dismissed or disappeared from public view over the past four years without official explanation.
It concluded that the documented absences highlight the sweeping scope of Xi’s military restructuring drive, which peaked last month with the removal of General Zhang Youxia, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and one of the highest-ranking officers in the armed forces.
China’s Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
