Sudan’s Al-Burhan Appoints Kamil Idris as Prime Minister

Sudan’s transitional leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, issued a constitutional decree on Monday appointing Dr. Kamil Idris as the country’s new Prime Minister, in a significant political development amid ongoing turmoil.

In a separate decree, Al-Burhan also appointed Salma Abdel Jabbar Mubarak and Nowara Abu Mohammed Taher as the first women to join the Sovereign Council since July 2022, increasing the number of council members from seven to nine.

According to an official statement from the Sovereign Council, the appointments are part of ongoing efforts to broaden political participation and enhance inclusivity within Sudan’s transitional governing bodies.

Kamil Idris is a renowned legal scholar and former international official, having held senior positions in various UN agencies. The inclusion of Mubarak and Taher marks a historic moment for women’s representation in Sudan’s top political institutions.

The announcement comes as Sudan remains gripped by a protracted conflict between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, with mounting international pressure to resume political dialogue and restore the path toward civilian-led governance.
