Taiwan announced the first confirmed case of the Chikungunya virus, which was transmitted from China, where the country is experiencing a historic epidemic outbreak of the virus transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.
As of Wednesday, China had recorded over 7,000 cases in Foshan city in Guangdong province, marking the largest outbreak of its kind there due to a lack of immunity among the local population.
The virus causes debilitating symptoms and severe pain but rarely leads to death.
