Tanzania Charges Over 100 Protesters with Treason Following Post-Election Unrest

Tanzanian authorities on Friday charged more than 100 people with treason over protests that erupted after the October 29 elections, which sparked widespread unrest and anti-government demonstrations, judicial sources told AFP.

A judicial official in Dar es Salaam said that 138 suspects appeared before a local court, while another source indicated that the total number of those being prosecuted exceeds one hundred.

According to the charge sheets, most of the defendants are accused of attempting to “disrupt the 2025 general elections with the aim of intimidating the executive authority,” as well as causing “significant damage to public property used for essential services.”

The charges come amid heightened political tensions in Tanzania, with opposition groups accusing the government of using legal measures to stifle dissent.
