Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan secured a sweeping victory with 97.6% of the vote in elections marred by violent protests and allegations of fraud.
The main opposition party, Chadema, claimed around 700 people were killed in clashes, a figure the government called “grossly exaggerated.”
International organizations have called for an independent investigation.
Hassan, the country’s first female president, seeks to consolidate her authority after tensions with the late President Magufuli’s faction.
