Tens of thousands of Bulgarians protested against the government on Monday, expanding an anti-corruption movement in the European Union’s poorest country as it prepares to adopt the euro.
In the largest demonstration in years, protesters gathered in a massive square in front of parliament, carrying signs demanding government change and criticizing the 2026 budget, which they say is an attempt to conceal widespread corruption.
Clashes erupted between protesters and police, who cordoned off the offices of ruling parties in Sofia, as demonstrators threw stones, bottles, and fireworks, heightening tensions in the capital.
