Thai and Cambodian Forces Clash Again Near Disputed Border Areas

Renewed clashes erupted early Friday between Thai and Cambodian military forces in the border provinces of Ubon Ratchathani and Surin, according to a statement from the Thai Army.

Army spokesperson Richa Suksuwan told CNN that Cambodian troops initiated the confrontation by firing both light and heavy weapons. Thai forces responded with artillery shelling as tensions along the border continue to escalate.

The spokesperson confirmed that Thai units remain on high alert and that the situation is being closely monitored.

The latest violence follows deadly fighting on Thursday near the historic Khmer temple, located in a long-disputed area along the Thai-Cambodian border. That incident resulted in the deaths of 14 Thai soldiers and left several others injured.

The Thai-Cambodian border has seen repeated flare-ups over the years, often linked to sovereignty disputes surrounding ancient temples and culturally significant landmarks. Despite diplomatic efforts, the border remains a flashpoint for armed confrontations between the two neighboring nations.
