Thailand’s military accused Cambodia on Tuesday of violating a ceasefire agreement aimed at halting border clashes between the two nations, just hours after it officially came into force at midnight.
In a statement, Thai army deputy spokesperson Richa Suksanan said that “disturbances were reported in the Phu Makua area caused by Cambodian forces, leading to an exchange of gunfire that continued into Tuesday morning.”
He added that additional clashes were recorded in the Sam Taet region, lasting until approximately 5:30 a.m. local time.
The accusations come less than a day after Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” following peace talks hosted by Malaysia, which currently holds the rotating chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
