Thailand’s Queen Mother Sirikit Dies at 93

Thailand’s Queen Mother Sirikit has passed away at the age of 93, the Royal Household Bureau announced on Saturday, marking the end of an era for one of the country’s most revered royal figures.

The palace said Sirikit had been hospitalized since 2019 due to ongoing health complications and succumbed late Friday after suffering a bloodstream infection on October 17. She had largely withdrawn from public life following a stroke in 2012.

The government declared a year-long mourning period for members of the royal family, while national flags will be flown at half-mast.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul canceled his planned trip to attend the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, and the cabinet is set to meet later today to discuss arrangements for the royal funeral, officials said.

Sirikit, the widow of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, was deeply admired across Thailand for her charitable work and decades-long service to the monarchy.
