At least 13 people have died this week in Colombia after unusually heavy rainfall for this time of year triggered floods and landslides, officials said on Sunday.
Colombia’s national weather agency IDEAM said a cold front moving from North America towards the country’s Caribbean coast increased rainfall last month by 64% compared with historical averages.
Seven of the victims were killed in a landslide in southwestern Narino province late on Friday into Saturday, after a waterway overflowed due to heavy rains and buried homes under mud, provincial authorities said.
Emergency teams are continuing to assess the damage and assist affected communities.
