Thousands of supporters of ousted Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro rallied on Friday to mark the anniversary of the fall of the military dictatorship in 1958, calling for his release following a U.S. military operation that led to his arrest in Caracas on January 3.
While Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez, the former vice president, has sought closer ties with Washington, the government continues to demand the return of Maduro, who ruled the country since 2013.
Protesters also displayed a large banner near O’Leary Square in central Caracas reading “We want them back,” referring to Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
