Local authorities in Ethiopia’s Afar region reported that Tigray forces launched a new offensive, seizing six villages and shelling civilian areas with heavy artillery.

The assault comes two years after the end of a devastating civil war, amid rising tensions between the federal government and regional states.

Afar’s administration warned it would defend itself if the attacks continued.
