The United States and China are working to strengthen ties through possible contacts between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, though Beijing has yet to confirm plans for the call, U.S. officials said.
Discussions are underway to arrange a potential summit between the two leaders on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, scheduled to take place in South Korea from October 30 to November 1.
One of the most contentious issues between Washington and Beijing remains the future of the social media app TikTok. The U.S. Congress has mandated that Chinese parent company ByteDance sell its U.S. assets by January 2025 or face a nationwide ban. Trump has postponed enforcement of the deadline while the administration seeks a new buyer.
