Trump Banner Raised at Justice Department Sparks Criticism Over Institutional Independence

A banner bearing U.S. President Donald Trump’s image was raised on the Justice Department building on Thursday, positioned between two columns on one corner of the headquarters, featuring the slogan “Make America Safe Again.”

Critics said the move blurred the lines between political authority and government institutions that are traditionally expected to operate independently.

The banner follows similar steps taken at other federal institutions in recent months. Images of Trump were previously displayed at the Departments of Labor and Agriculture, as well as at the U.S. Institute of Peace.

In December, a board appointed by Trump voted to add his name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. His name was also added to a building at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
