Trump receives Peace Award during 2026 World Cup draw in Washington

In a historic event combining sports and diplomacy, U.S. President Donald Trump received the Peace Award during the draw ceremony for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, held at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington on Friday.

The ceremony was attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and several artistic and sports figures, accompanied by musical performances by international stars.

The upcoming edition will feature 48 teams for the first time in World Cup history, divided into 12 groups of four teams each.

The qualification format includes the group winners and runners-up, in addition to the best eight third-placed teams.

The identities of six teams remain undecided and will be determined in March 2026 through the European and global playoffs.

The draw placed Mexico in the opening match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on June 11, where it will face South Africa.

Group A: Mexico – South Africa – South Korea – Winner of the European playoff (Denmark / Czechia / Republic of Ireland / North Macedonia).

Group B: Canada – Switzerland – Qatar – Winner of the European playoff (Italy / Northern Ireland / Wales / Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Group C: Brazil – Morocco – Scotland – Haiti.

Group D: United States – Australia – Paraguay – Winner of the European playoff (Turkey / Romania / Slovakia / Kosovo).

Group E: Germany – Ecuador – Côte d’Ivoire – Curaçao.

Group F: Netherlands – Japan – Tunisia – Winner of the European playoff (Ukraine / Sweden / Poland / Albania).

Group G: Belgium – Iran – Egypt – New Zealand.

Group H: Spain – Uruguay – Saudi Arabia – Cape Verde.

Group I: France – Senegal – Norway – Winner of the global playoff (Bolivia / Iraq / Suriname).

Group J: Argentina – Austria – Algeria – Jordan.

Group K: Portugal – Colombia – Uzbekistan – Winner of the global playoff (DR Congo / New Caledonia / Jamaica).

Group L: England – Croatia – Panama – Ghana.

Sixteen teams will compete in the European playoff for four available spots, while six teams will compete in the global playoff for two remaining places in the tournament.
