U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose 200 percent tariffs on France if President Emmanuel Macron refuses to join what he described as a “Peace Council” regarding the Gaza Strip.
Speaking to reporters on Monday evening, Trump said: “I will impose 200 percent tariffs on French wine and champagne, and then (Macron) will join. But he is not obligated to do so.”
Trump also claimed that the French president “will leave office soon” and said that Macron is “unwelcome,” remarks likely to further escalate tensions between Washington and Paris.
